Best January Sale TV Adverts
When the new year arrives, it’s no surprise to see January sale adverts taking over our TV screens. Whilst many look to be quickly put together voiceovers of top sale items, a few stand out and capture our attention. This article highlights these and provides further insights about how they were made.
Mcdonalds January Sale Advert – January 2000
This McDonald’s advert from January 2020 almost mocks the traditional January Sale style advert. This advert has a celebrity cast, hosted by the late comedian Ted Rogers, and former glamour model turned-TV presenter Linda Lusardi.
In this advert, you see discounts presented in true “January Sale” style, with jokes inserted throughout, including a joke that free delivery is available within a 2 feet radius, from where you order at the till and take away. Additionally, there’s a joke that there’s a free bag with every purchase, which nowadays can be chargeable!
Promoting a McDonald’s January sale at this time is perfect, as many January sale shoppers can seek refuge with a Big Mac and Fries.
Better Bathrooms Advert – January 2015
In this comedic-fuelled advert, Better Bathrooms are shown trying to show their sale prices for bathroom products shown in a couple’s home, however, the couple are reluctant to reveal that their bathroom was so cheap to buy, attempting to hide any sale sign or price whilst trying to use the bathroom themselves. This leaves them in an awkward situation where they need to use the sale signs to hide their modesty!
Affordable Mobiles – January 2020
In another comical advert, an office worker prepares to buy a mobile phone in the Janaury sale by covering himself in protective gear, knowing he’ll be facing big queues, fighting for deals, and bracing the winter weather. His coworker informs him that he needn’t go through so much turmoil, as he can just visit affordablemobiles.co.uk.
The character in this advert was played by the late actor Ewan MacIntosh, who has sadly recently passed away aged 50. He was perhaps best known for his role as Keith in the UK Office.
Go Full Lidl This January! – January 2023
In this Irish advert, we’re witness to a number of conversations between shoppers in Lidl, getting excited about the cheap products available that they’ve perhaps not bought before, including “pea nuggets” and not knowing how to cook prawns, asking if microwaving is an option!
This advert manages to subtly show the different types of customers at Lidl, not just ones looking for a deal, but people excited about buying and cooking different foods to get the “full Lidl.
Lamps Plus – January 2023
This advert was added to our list primarily because I find it difficult to believe people can be so incredibly happy about their lamps. In this American Lamps Plus advert, we’re met with many beaming faces from couples, individuals and families who have just saved up to 50% with their Lamps Plus purchases.
Unfortunately, UK visitors are unable to browse or order from the Lamps Plus website. We’ll have to see our happiness from elsewhere.
Reed – Love Mondays – January 2023
This is a wildcard choice for our January Sale advert, as it doesn’t provide a sale. However, we wanted to include it as it embodies a very positive message for the start of the year, which is to make sure you love Mondays, by having a job you look forward to going to!
In this musical-style advert, a man (played by Paterson Joseph) is dancing around his office and commute singing about how much he loves Mondays, a feeling I’m sure we all strive to have.
This was an extremely successful advert for Reed, where they claimed “74% of people we interviewed said that they would be more likely to use Reed.co.uk based on our advertising creative, across all age groups.”
We hope that future January adverts take note from this advert, and reinforce positive messages to help us have the best start to the year.
