Energy Drink TV Adverts: From a Hospital Drink to Sports Fuel (1980-2025)
When Energy Drinks Were Medicine (1980-1985)
Energy drinks weren’t always about sports and staying awake. Back in the 1980s, Lucozade was known as something you’d drink when you were ill. Their TV adverts showed mums bringing bottles to their sick children to help their recovery.
These early adverts are easy to spot – they always showed the Lucozade bottle wrapped in that bright yellow cellophane wrapper. With soft music playing in the background, these gentle adverts made Lucozade feel like a caring brand that helped you feel better.
You might remember these famous adverts:
- 1980: Mum visits the hospital with a Lucozade bottle
- 1983: People getting better at home, always with Lucozade nearby
- 1985: The last advert showing Lucozade as medicine before it changed to sports drinks
Becoming a Sports Drink (1985-1995)
In the mid-1980s, Lucozade changed completely. Instead of showing unwell people in bed, their adverts now showed people exercising, partaking in big days out, and playing sports. This was a big change for the brand.
The new adverts were clever. They kept the idea of Lucozade helping you, but now it was about having more energy for sports and activities instead of simply getting over illness.
When Lucozade Sport came out, the adverts showed people training and exercising, which was very different from the mother and child scenes of before.
Red Bull Arrives (1995-2005)
Red Bull brought something completely new to British TV. Their cartoon adverts, which we all know today, were unlike anything we’d seen before. At first, people weren’t sure what to make of these simple drawings and jokes.
The famous “Red Bull Gives You Wings” adverts used British humour to win people over. Instead of showing real people drinking Red Bull, they used funny cartoons that made people laugh. These adverts were much cheaper to make than other drinks adverts at the time, but people remembered them more.
More Energy Drinks Join In (2005-2015)
As energy drinks became more popular, new brands started showing their adverts on TV. Relentless Energy made adverts about rock music, while Monster Energy focused on racing and motorsports.
Even supermarkets started making their own energy drinks and adverts. These often made jokes about the bigger brands while showing that their drinks cost less. Energy drinks weren’t just about giving you energy anymore – they were trying to sell a whole lifestyle.
Today’s Energy Drink Adverts (2015-2025)
Modern energy drink adverts have changed again. Now they talk about helping your brain work better, not just giving you energy for sports. They show gamers and office workers, not just athletes. Many brands now talk about helping the environment too, showing how they use better packaging and natural ingredients. Monster Energy showcases information on their website about their sustainability efforts.
These adverts now work with social media too. A TV advert is often just the start, with brands wanting people to share and talk about their adverts online.
Looking Back
It’s amazing to see how energy drink adverts have changed over 45 years. From quiet hospital rooms to extreme sports, from simple cartoons to complex social media campaigns, these adverts show how Britain has changed too.
What started as a simple glucose drink for ill people has grown into a huge range of energy drinks, each with its own style of advertising. While today’s adverts are very different from those early Lucozade hospital scenes, they’re still trying to convince us that their drinks will help us feel better – just in different ways.
